Halloween Trick or Treat Safety Tips from Linda Moore

As children make plans to leave their Encinitas homes and go trick or treating this year parents need to be aware of the possible dangers that can accompany their outing. In preparation for this annual event I would like to provide my readers with some responsible safety tips to ensure your children have a happy yet safe Halloween experience. When parents take the time to inform their children of the importance of Halloween safety in advance it makes for a more enjoyable and worry free time for everyone!

Trick or Treat in groups - There is built in safety in numbers so please make sure you do not allow children to go trick or treating alone on Halloween night. Parents should always accompany the youngest children and never allow them to go trick or treating with other children only.

Ensure that masks are comfortable and allow for good visibility and breathing – Mask design has greatly improved over time however parents should always check for good fit . Make sure the eye and nose openings are wide enough to allow the your child unobstructed vision at all times.

Use reflective clothing – When your children are out trick or treating, make sure that everyone in group is wearing some sort of reflective clothing. If their costume does not contain reflective material you can buy some reflective tape, cut it into strips and apply it to several different areas of the costume.

Bring some flashlights – Always provide your children with several working flashlights. Oncoming traffic will be able to see the trick or treaters sooner, thereby decreasing the possibility of any injury involving a motor vehicle. Children will also be less likely to trip or fall if they can properly see where they are going.

Inspect all candy – Make sure to let your children know how important it is for candy to be checked before they can eat it. Tell them not to eat any candy during trick or treating. A great way to keep them them from eating candy while trick or treating is to give them their favorite goodies before they go out.

As a full service Realtor I’m dedicated to serving the interests of Encinitas homeowners by providing positive economic news as it arises. With all the negative media coverage surrounding the general state of the economy and the real estate market, it’s truly refreshing to hear that the San Diego County was recently ranked as the cheapest place for doing business in the state of California. The survey reviewed 413 cities across the United States and evaluated prospective cities in five categories ranging from from very high cost to very low cost. Noted as having the absolute lowest cost were Encinitas, San Marcos, Poway, Santee and Lemon Grove and the least affected by business fees and property taxes. Their classification as being the in the lowest cost tier positions them as the most competitive places to do business in the entire state. The next lowest category included the towns of Escondido, Vista, National City, El Cajon, La Mesa, Imperial Beach and San Diego. Business enterprises located in the region should be proud of these statistics which create opportunities to attract new commerce and continue the pattern of economic buoyancy.

Southern California is one of the few places in the country that enables one to experience a great variety of natural landscapes, activities, and cultural events. One can literally chose to spend a Saturday surfing then drive out to the mountains and snow ski on Sunday! Living in an Encinitas home is amazing and grants access to the best that this country has to offer! Aside from all the awesome concerts and events kicking off this month, an awesome opportunity to check out local art is nearing.

If you are looking for an excuse to leave your Encinitas home for an evening, consider taking part in the Second Saturday Art Walk in Escondido! It occurs on the second Saturday of every month, however taking part in it during the summer is always best. The art walk, which starts in downtown Escondido at 5 pm on August 14th, explores plenty of local galleries and museums which are all within a short radius of the starting point. There are plenty of galleries that display all sorts of art, including the work created by local up and coming talent. Encinitas Lions Club – Dreams Come True!

In September of 2009, the South Ponto Beach was filled with people surfing and learning how to surf. Sounds like a normal day…. right? However, the surfers were blind! It fills my heart with joy when I hear or read stories of such amazing accomplishments. The wonderful people participating as well as the organizers deserve plenty of credit!

The Encinitas Lions Club helped make the surfing event a possibility. The club is a wonderful philanthropic non profit organization that is dedicated to bettering our and surrounding communities. The Encinitas Lions Club provides free eye glasses and eye tests for those that are in need. They raise money for disaster relief as well as other community needs. The organization is ran by several doctors and regularly runs diabetes testing clinics in addition to eye testing. They understand the importance of community help and reach out to anybody willing to help. In fact, many teens living in Carlsbad homes have joined their sponsored community service club at La Costa Canyon High School.

The Encinitas Lions Club has a remarkable ability to enable people with vision disabilities to accomplish amazing tasks. The surfing event of last summer is just one example!
