Simple Ways to Reduce Your Energy Bill

One thing many first-time homebuyers are surprised to discover is the increase in their monthly energy bill. It takes significantly more juice to cool and power a home than it does an apartment, and that fact is written in black and white on your monthly bill.

What you may not know is there are several ways to reduce your monthly bill. Here are a few simple tips to help cut your energy costs.

Lower Your Hot Water Heater to 120 Degrees Fahrenheit

120 degrees Fahrenheit (55 degrees Celsius) is the optimal temperature for hot water heaters. Most people do not use water that is hotter than this, so having your hot water heater set higher is just wasting energy.

Use a Water Heater Blanket

Most modern hot water heaters are already properly insulated, but older heaters may not be. A small investment in a water heater blanket could save you considerably in the long run. These blankets will help prevent heat from dispersing into the air, making it far more efficient.

Install Ceiling Fans

Air conditioning can cause your monthly energy bill to spike, especially in the summer months. Ceiling fans will help with the circulation of air, allowing you to keep your thermostat a few degrees higher. This may not seem like much, but the savings can quickly add up.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

Programmable thermostats are a great way easily adjust the temperature in your home to your liking, and they can also save you quite a bit of money. Most modern thermostats allow you to program different temperatures for certain times, and even specify the day of the week you want to change. If you love coming home to a cool house, but don’t want to leave the air on while you’re away, you can program the thermostat to lower the temperature right before you’re set to arrive. This can save you quite a bit of money without having to even think about it!
